Ruby 18 teas are made from Cultivar No 18, Hong Yu, Red Jade which was developed by TRES (Taiwan Tea Research Extension Station) for black tea production. The Ruby 18 plants gives delicious black teas that are smooth, sulky and rounded, have a malty, lightly mentholated flavour, with hints of tobacco, prunes and raisins.

The cultivar is a cross between between a large-leaf Assam cultivar from Burma (Myanmar), and the native Taiwan wild mountain tea tree. Ruby 18 black teas are grown in the Sun Moon Lake area.
