Admired as the highest grade of Japanese tea, Gyokuro tea is virtually unrivaled. Its leaves are intentionally left to grow in the shade for twenty days. The leaves are then expertly handpicked. Immediately after picking, the leaves are steamed, dried then carefully rolled. The end product of Gyokuro tea distinctively resembles pine needles and a high level of antioxidants. It’s remarkable delicate, vegtable flavor and aftertaste makes it sought after by green tea connoisseurs. Gyokuro has a fresh, kelpy "umami" in taste and aroma. Gyokuro is produced in limited quantities in the Asahina mountainous area near Shizuoka City. Shizuoka is Japan’s top mountainous tea growing region based on local-oriented traditions and history. The high elevations yield fertile soil and freshwater resources, which give mountain-grown teas their distinctive flavors and characteristics. High elevation tea producers grow a wide variety of unique terroir teas. The slopes along these clear streams are abundant in mineral rich soils and provide good drainage.
