This very fine Chinese White Tea is a descendant of the tribute tea that once supplied the Chinese Emperor. It originates from Fujian province, where it has been cultivated for centuries. It is made exclusively from the finest young buds of the tea plant, which are covered with fine, silvery-white hairs. These buds are carefully hand-picked in early spring, often within a two-day window to ensure the best quality. Afterwards the buds are air-dried up to approx. 5% oxidation. Because of this meticulous harvesting and minimal processing - just withering and drying - Silver Needle tea retains a high level of antioxidants, particularly catechins. Its gentle processing also gives it a subtle, smooth, sweet flavour with clean floral notes, making it one of the most delicate and sought-after white teas.
The origins of Silver Needle tea date back to the Tang (618–907) and Song (960–1279) dynasties, but it became especially popular during the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912). Nowadays, there are many regions that produce “Silver Needle” teas. Basically, any bud-only white tea is often named Silver Needle. Nevertheless, Fujian Silver Needle is considered the most traditional and authentic Silver Needle. A high-quality Silver Needle needs to look very consistent, with small, unbroken, relatively straight buds and an even silvery, pale green color. Just like the ones we have here.
