Description

Grown in the misty mountain valleys of Yabemura Village in Yame, Fukuoka, this exceptional Gyokuro represents one of Japan's most revered tea traditions. For three weeks before harvest, the tea bushes are carefully shaded, reducing sunlight exposure by approximately 85%. This slow, protected growth encourages the leaves to develop extraordinary sweetness and a rich concentration of amino acids, while minimizing bitterness and astringency. Harvested in mid-May from tea gardens situated between 300 and 700 meters above sea level, the young and delicate spring leaves are processed using a medium steaming technique. Due to the tenderness and small size of the freshly harvested leaves, the tea develops a character that is surprisingly similar to a deep-steamed (Fukamushi) tea. While a typical medium-steamed Sencha is steamed for around 30–40 seconds, these delicate leaves soften more readily during processing, resulting in a fuller body, richer mouthfeel, and a vibrant emerald-green liquor. Unlike traditionally crafted Gyokuro produced under handmade bamboo or straw coverings, this Premium Gyokuro is cultivated under modern vinyl shading and machine harvested. While more practical in production, the extended shading period remains the defining element, imparting the signature richness, sweetness, and profound umami for which Gyokuro is celebrated. Traditionally, high-grade Gyokuro is matured for several months before release, allowing its intense green notes to soften and its savory sweetness to become even more pronounced. This tea, however, is offered as a fresh-season release, giving tea enthusiasts the rare opportunity to experience the vibrant character of newly harvested Gyokuro or to age the tea themselves and witness its evolution over time. The cup reveals a luxurious balance of sweet vegetal notes, concentrated umami, and a silky mouthfeel. Despite its richness, the finish remains remarkably clean, with only the faintest hint of astringency.
