Description

Harvested in early May 2026 in the lush tea-growing region of Mashiki, Kumamoto, this fresh Kabuse Okumidori captures the vibrant spirit of Japan's spring tea season. Produced by a family-operated tea farm committed to sustainable cultivation, this tea offers a pure expression of terroir, craftsmanship, and cultivar character. For approximately two weeks before harvest, the tea bushes are carefully shaded, qualifying the tea as a Kabusecha. This partial shading encourages the development of amino acids while preserving the freshness and vitality of the young spring leaves. The result is a tea that beautifully bridges the gap between Sencha and Gyokuro, offering both richness and refreshing clarity. Okumidori has become one of Japan's most admired cultivars for its naturally deep green appearance and smooth, elegant character. While previous harvests of this cultivar are often known for pronounced umami, the 2026 harvest presents a slightly different expression. This year's tea is more restrained in its savoriness, allowing fresh vegetal notes and gentle marine nuances to take center stage. The cup opens with soft umami and sweet spring greens before revealing flavours reminiscent of steamed vegetables, young spinach, and a delicate ocean breeze. A lingering sweetness gradually unfolds across the palate, leaving a remarkably clean and refreshing finish. The leaves are steamed slightly longer than a standard Sencha, enhancing body and smoothness while still retaining their beautiful needle-like appearance. The result is a tea with depth and elegance, yet without the heavier texture often associated with deep-steamed Fukamushi teas. Its balanced profile makes it exceptionally versatile and surprisingly well suited to Western desserts, where its fresh vegetal sweetness beautifully complements cakes, pastries, and delicate sweets.
